Nicosia, is the capital of Cyprus and the only divided city in the world. Lefkosia, as it is known by the Cypriots, is a busy cosmopolitan inland town with very warm summers. See the old Venetian walls which were built to protect the city from invaders; and see the National Museum. The city is a must using public transport to avoid traffic.
The only European divided City has a lot to offer in terms of culture - the Green line and Old Nicosia with its old houses now hosting museums, taverns, souvenir, and handicraft centres. One such an area is the "Laiki Yitonia" where people enjoy a laid back atmosphere in the local tavernas, souvenir shops and coffee shops.
Nicosia is also home to the Archbishops Palace; the private apartments of Archbishop Makarios, the first President of Cyprus, whose statue is located just outside the palace. |
